[ARCHIVED] Illegal Discharge of Stormwater can Overload Sewer Collection Lines

Basement Drain

Spring weather can present challenges both to homeowners and to our sewer service providers.  When homeowners illegally drain excess water into the sewer system it can cause problems by overloading the sewer collection lines, resulting in potential sewer water backing up into homes.  The sewer treatment plant spends additional time and money to treat this excess stormwater that it was never designed to treat.  If you have a sump pump that is discharging into the sewer, please redirect it to a legal means of drainage. If you are unsure of how to accomplish this or if you are unsure if you have an illegally connected sump pump, please contact Kaysville City Public Works.

Ways to prevent water from getting into your home:

  • Make sure your lot is graded properly so water drains away from buildings. Sandbags can be placed around window wells to help keep water out.
  • Install extensions or splash blocks on rain gutters to redirect water away from your house.
  • Check your sump pump and consider having a spare.
  • Repair any cracks in your foundation and basement walls.
  • Do not leave sprinklers on too long, or too often.
