Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week
October 8-14, 2023

The Origins of Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week traces its origins back to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This devastating fire, which occurred from October 8th to 10th, consumed thousands of buildings, took numerous lives, and left a trail of destruction in its wake. In an effort to honor the memory of those affected by this tragedy and to raise awareness about fire safety, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) established Fire Prevention Week. The week surrounding October 9th was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire.

The Purpose of Fire Prevention Week
The primary aim of Fire Prevention Week is to educate the public about fire safety and prevention. Each year, the NFPA selects a specific theme to focus on, and fire departments across the nation use this theme to create educational campaigns and events. The Theme this year is: Cooking Safety Starts with You. Pay Attention to Fire Prevention.

Kaysville Fire Department's 2023 Celebration
As in years past the Kaysville Fire Department is joining the nationwide effort to promote fire safety during Fire Prevention Week.

Please join us for the Annual Kaysville Fire Department Open House at the fire station on October 11th from 6:00-8:30 PM, where there will be an extraction demonstration, a medical helicopter, tours of the fire vehicles, vendor displays, and prizes.

Public Power Week

Public Power Week
October 1-7

Public Power Week is a national event that is celebrated across the nation the first full week of October every year.  It is celebrated as a way to emphasize public power's hometown advantages. Public Power Week also honors the democratic tradition of community decision-making and participation that led to the founding of Kaysville Power & Light in 1908.

Like more than 2,000 utilities across the country, Kaysville City is powered by a community-owned, not-for-profit power utility. Public power utilities operate as a public service, with a mission to provide reliable electricity at a reasonable cost with proper protection for the environment. Kaysville Power & Light is proud of the service they provide to the citizens of Kaysville City.  They have a track record of low rates, reliability, and public service that sustains our community.  They continue to focus on how public power utilities are building for the future to ensure safe, reliable, affordable, sustainable, and customer-focused service to the community for many years to come.

During Public Power Week, join us in celebrating the benefits of living in a public power community.

School Crossing

Back-to-School: Crossing Zones

School crossing zones are designed to enhance safety for students, but it's crucial for everyone to play their part in ensuring a safe environment. Here are some tips for school crossing zones and safety:

? Always obey the posted speed limits in school zones. These limits are reduced to give drivers more time to react and stop if necessary.
?Pay close attention to your surroundings when driving through a school zone. Look for school crossing signs, flashing lights, and crossing guards. Expect unexpected movements from children.
? Stop for school buses when they stop to pick up or drop off children. Wait until the bus has completely finished its stop and retracted its stop sign before proceeding.
? If you're a pedestrian, always use designated crosswalks when available. Cross only at marked intersections or crossings and obey traffic signals and crossing guards.
? Before crossing the street, teach children to look left and right, and left again, to ensure there are no approaching vehicles. Remind them to make eye contact with drivers if possible. Teach them how to cross streets safely, look for cars, and use crosswalks.
? Whether you're driving or walking, put away distractions such as cell phones or headphones. Distractions can impair your ability to react to potential hazards.
? If present, obey crossing guards' signals and directions without question. They are there to ensure safe crossing for pedestrians.
? As a driver, yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks and at intersections. Even if you have the right-of-way, allow pedestrians to cross safely.
? Be patient and understanding, especially during busy drop-off and pick-up times. Rushing can lead to dangerous situations.
? Don't park in no-parking zones or block driveways near schools. This can impede traffic flow and create hazards.

By following these tips and promoting a culture of safety in school zones, we can help protect the lives of students and create a safer environment for everyone. Safety in school crossing zones is a shared responsibility that involves drivers, pedestrians, parents, and school authorities working together.

Stay Out of Work Zones

We know it may be tempting, but please stay out of the West Davis Corridor work zone. Our police officers are continuing to issue many tickets for trespassing on the property. This also includes the walking path. Please stay out of this area as crews are working diligently to get the road up and running. UDOT team members and police officers are trying to keep you safe, as well as trying to keep themselves safe so that they can get back to their families at the end of the day. Please have a little patience and wait until the highway is completed and open to use it. Thank you!
